Today little ME had speech. She has taken speech since she was 2 years old and had a vocabulary of a 12 month old. Today she is talking up a storm and there are even days when she tells me, "I don't need speech anymore." But she only says that because it's causing her to leave a friend's house early, or her to stop playing with something that is far more important than just talking to some woman...
But she still needs speech because there are words she can not pronounce and she's starting a lovely lisp habit which isn't entirely uncommon at this age, but because she has had prior problems, she will continue to receive services next school year.
Well, today she was telling her speech teacher about fish. Then suddenly she burst into this amazing story about being a fish and swimming in Mrs. Thein's pool and how she would wear her Ariel bathing suit, but she wouldn't be exactly like her because her feet wouldn't do this- this is where she takes her legs, sticks them together on the table and says, "you know, cause I'm not a real mermaid you know."
Her teacher and I were speechless as we both silently laughed until our bodies were shaking and tears were rolling down our faces.
Cause she's not a real mermaid, you know...
